महात्मा गांधी ने कहा है, ‘आरोग्य का अर्थ है तन्दुरुस्त शरीर। अखाड़े की कसरत से मनुष्य दीर्घायु या श्रम-सहिष्णु बनता ही है, ऐसा नहीं है। लोग शरीर से पहलवान होते हुए भी हृदय से कायर हो सकते हैं। आसन और प्राणायाम का उद्देश्य शरीर को भोगी नहीं, बल्कि शुद्ध बनाना है। इनसे कितनी ही बीमारियां दूर होती हैं। हवा का काम है रक्त की शुद्धि करना, मगर हमें फेफड़ों में हवा भरना और उसे बाहर निकालना ठीक से आता नहीं है, इसलिए रक्त की शुद्धि ठीक से नहीं हो पाती। मुंह से श्वास लेना बुरी आदत है। नाक में कुदरत ने एक तरह की छलनी रखी है, जिससे छन कर हवा भीतर जाती है। इसलिए हर किसी के लिए जरूरी है प्राणायाम सीखना। प्राणायाम जीवन को सहजता से लेना सिखाता है। सुबह उठ कर जैसे हम मुंह साफ करते हैं, वैसे ही नाक की सफाई भी जरूरी है। फेफड़ों में शुद्ध हवा भरनी ही चाहिए। इसलिए रात को आकाश के नीचे या बरामदे में सोने की आदत डालना अच्छा है। उत्तम से उत्तम कसरत है खुली हवा में तेजी से घूमना। चलते समय मुंह बंद होना चाहिए और सांस नाक के जरिए लेना चाहिए। चलते, बैठते समय शरीर बिल्कुल सीधा और तना हुआ होना चाहिए। शरीर को इतना श्रम अवश्य करना चाहिए कि रात को जब मनुष्य बिस्तर पर जाए, वह तुरंत निद्रावश हो जाए।’
